Jargon hunt

Hunting for difficult words

Every text has a few difficult words. They are not marked: you track them down. Catch a word, choose an everyday word to replace it, and watch the text get easier. This is how you practise writing at language level B1. The texts and the words to choose from are in Dutch.

Playing together, for example in a team meeting?

Choose a type of language

Each type has four texts. Each text has four to six difficult words.

Or use your own text

Paste a Dutch letter, email or leaflet. The word list looks for the difficult words. Those are your targets, without marking. Your text stays on your own device.

Four tips for B1

  1. One idea per sentence. More than 20 words? Cut the sentence.
  2. Say who does something: ‘we sturen’ (we send) instead of ‘er wordt gestuurd’ (it is sent).
  3. A jargon word your reader will see more often can stay. Then explain it.
  4. Read your text out loud, or ask someone it is meant for to read it.

How it works

  1. Choose how you play: on your own, with your team, or with a text you wrote yourself.
  2. Read the text on the sheet and click every word you find difficult. With the keyboard, use the arrow keys to go from word to word and press Enter to catch a word.
  3. Choose an everyday word from three options. It goes into the text, with a stamp. The reading meter drops.
  4. Done? Then you see which words you missed. In the bonus round you cut a sentence that is too long in two.
  5. Your word card shows what you learned. Print it as a cheat sheet to keep next to your keyboard.

Why B1

Most adults can read a text at language level B1. Good readers also usually read such a text more easily and quickly. Jargon is not wrong, and between colleagues it is often exactly the right word. But your reader is usually not a colleague. Read more in Writing at B1 level for your clients and What is language level B1?

Six types of language

  • Care jargon: words from reports, plans and messages in health and social care.
  • Council language: words from council letters and websites.
  • Officialese: stiff words you come across in every kind of letter.
  • Medical: words from letters from the hospital, the GP and the pharmacy.
  • Education: words from letters and messages from school.
  • Money and debt: words from letters about bills, debts and payments.

Each type has four made-up texts, such as a letter from the council, a message from a support worker or a pharmacy label. For each difficult word there are three choices: a good one, one that is half right, and one that is wrong. Each choice says why. Sometimes the best choice is to keep the word and explain it, as with beslagvrije voet (the part of your income that cannot be taken for debts): your reader will see that word again later.

With your team

Play with two to six players or teams, for example in a team meeting or a training session. Take turns to catch one word. A hit: you choose the everyday word. A miss: it is the next player’s turn. The scoreboard keeps track of the points. Afterwards there are questions to talk about together, such as: which word do we use most ourselves?

Your own text

Paste a Dutch letter, email or leaflet. The word list looks for the difficult words and turns the text into a sheet. You track them down and choose what fits: a suggestion from the list, your own word, or leave it as it is. At the end you see the text before and after, side by side, and you copy the new text. The list comes from the Plain language check, with extra words from care, the council, hospitals, school and money matters. Want to check your whole text, including long words and the passive voice? Then use the Plain language check.

The reading meter

The reading meter is an estimate. It counts the average number of words per sentence, the average number of syllables per word, and how many difficult words from the list are still in the text. The first two come from the Flesch readability formula, adapted for Dutch by Douma. A greeting, a sign-off or a heading does not count. The meter does not understand the text: a short word can be difficult too. So also ask someone the text is meant for whether they understand it.

Good to know

  • There is no time pressure. You decide when a sheet is done.
  • Want more of a challenge? Turn on flying mode: the words then fly loose from the sheet. You can pause, slow down or turn it off again at any time. A word you let go lands back in the text. If ‘reduce motion’ is on for your device, the words stay still, in small groups.
  • Everything works with the keyboard. You can cut with the arrow keys or with buttons; you never need to drag.
  • The texts and names are made up. The choices are suggestions: what fits best depends on your reader.

Your data

Jargon hunt works entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent and nothing is saved. Your own text stays on your device. If you close or refresh the page, your text, your points and your word card are gone.

  • Copying puts the new text or your word card on your device’s clipboard. You choose where to paste it.
  • If you choose ‘Save as PDF’ when printing, the cheat sheet is saved as a file on your device.
  • GameSimulation

    Obstacle course

Try for yourself what it is like to use a website when you cannot see well, your hand shakes, reading is hard or you only have a keyboard. Then you repair the website and try again.
