Our goal
This website should meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Where we can, we go further: body text has a contrast of at least 7:1 (level AAA).
What we do
- All text has enough contrast, in both light and dark mode. Colour is never the only way we show something: links are underlined, and the colour code (blue for people seeking help, pink for care professionals) is always written out in words too.
- The site works from a screen width of 320 pixels and at 400% zoom, without scrolling sideways.
- Everything works with a keyboard alone. Focus is always clearly visible, and there is a link to skip straight to the content.
- Buttons and the main menu are at least 44 by 44 pixels, so they are easy to hit. Other links are at least 24 pixels high; a link in the middle of a sentence is as big as the text.
- The site also works without JavaScript. The menu then stays open, but everything remains reachable. Only the interactive tools themselves need JavaScript; if it is off, you see a message.
- We use a typeface designed for legibility (Atkinson Hyperlegible Next) and keep lines short.
- We respect your settings: reduced motion, dark mode and high contrast (Windows).
- The main pages exist in Dutch and English. The pages of individual tools, the knowledge pages and the privacy statements are in Dutch only (for now).
- We load nothing from other websites: no trackers, no cookies, no ads. Even the fonts are served from our own server.
- One tool (the accessibility statement generator) keeps what you type in your own browser, so you can carry on later. That is not a cookie and it goes nowhere. It expires after 7 days without changes, and the button ‘Wis mijn invoer’ (clear my input) removes it straight away.
How we check this
Every new version of the site runs an automated test on all pages. It checks the WCAG rules with axe-core in light and dark mode, measures whether each page fits 320 pixels, checks the menu is reachable without JavaScript, checks that all content shows when printed, looks for broken links, and makes sure nothing is loaded from other websites.
We also test by hand with the keyboard and with zoom.
An automated test does not find everything. No independent audit has been carried out yet.
What is not right yet
- Some images are screenshots with small text. The description (alt text) says what they show. We are replacing them with our own illustrations.
- The pages of individual tools and the knowledge pages are in Dutch only.
