Three good things

Three good things

What went well today?

Think back over your day. Write down three things that went well, in a few words.

You can also write down one or two things.

A few ideas, if you can’t think of anything
  • Something tasty you ate or drank
  • Someone who was kind to you
  • Something you did for someone else
  • Something that worked out, even if it was small
  • A quiet moment
  • Something beautiful you saw or heard
  • Something that made you laugh
  • Something you did to look after yourself

How it works

  1. Think back over your day. Find three things that went well or were nice.
  2. Write each thing down in a few words.
  3. Want to write more about it? With Say more about it you fill in how it came about, and what you did yourself.
  4. Press Next. Your good things then appear on a card.
  5. Copy the text or print the card if you want to keep them.

Where the exercise comes from

Three good things is an existing exercise. In full, it goes like this: every day, write down three things that went well, and write down why they went well. Do this for at least a week, about ten minutes a day.

The idea behind it: the small good things in a day are easy to overlook. What went badly often stays with you longer.

Using it together

You can also do the exercise together, for example at the end of a conversation with a client. The card can go home with them. Are you using a computer shared with other people? Close the page when you are done. Then everything is gone.

Good to know

  • If it doesn’t work out today, skip a day.
  • You write it for yourself. No one else sees it, unless you show it to them.
  • Have you been feeling low for a while, or is it getting in the way of your daily life? Talk about it with your GP or with a care worker.
