In danger, or thinking about suicide

Emergency number 112

In immediate danger, for the police, fire brigade or ambulance.

Language: If you call 112, the conversation is not translated. In the 112NL app it is: the app has a chat that translates the conversation into your language. The app is available in eighteen languages, including English and Turkish. Put it on your phone in advance.

113 Zelfmoordpreventie

For people who are thinking about suicide, and for people who are worried about someone.

Day and night. Calling and chatting is free and anonymous.

Language: The conversation is in Dutch. Mostly it can also be in English: ask for someone who speaks English. The 113 website says nothing about other languages. You can only call from the Netherlands; from abroad, you can chat.

An interpreter, or someone who comes with you

At the GP, the municipality and the neighbourhood team, you can ask for an interpreter. You can also bring someone you trust.

Only let that person translate in a simple conversation, if you both want that and if they speak both languages well. In a difficult or sensitive conversation, an interpreter is better. Do not let a child interpret.

The GP (huisarts)

For your health, physical and mental.

Language: Is your Dutch not very good? Then ask your GP for an interpreter, preferably when you make the appointment. Your GP decides together with you whether an interpreter will join. GP practices can often bring in an interpreter at no cost, through a fund in their region. If there is no fund, the GP pays for the interpreter.

The municipality and the neighbourhood team (gemeente, wijkteam)

For help at home, and with parenting, money or work.

Language: Here too, you can ask for an interpreter. There is no national arrangement: who arranges and pays for the interpreter differs per municipality. You may ask someone to be at the conversation yourself, for example someone you trust or an independent client support worker (onafhankelijke cliëntondersteuner).

Other helplines

De Luisterlijn

For when you want to talk to someone.

You can call day and night; you pay your normal call charges. Chatting is free.

Language: The conversations are in Dutch. If a volunteer wants to and is able to speak another language, the conversation can be in that language.

Het Juridisch Loket

Free advice about a legal problem, if you have a low income.

Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 17:00. Calling is free.

Language: The website is also in English. Advice is also possible in a few other languages, mainly for EU migrant workers, such as Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Greek and Spanish. The website does not say whether you can get help in English or Turkish on the phone.
