Accessibility statement generator

Accessibility statement generator

What you enter stays only in this browser, so you can carry on later. After 7 days without changes, it is deleted.

This name goes at the top of the statement.

What have you already done to make your website better?

Tick what is already done. Anything you do not tick goes in the PDF under ‘Hier gaan we nog aan werken’ (What we are still going to work on).

Ticked: 0 of 20. The other 20 go in the PDF with what you are still going to do.

How it works

An accessibility statement tells visitors what you have done to make your website usable for more people, and what is not finished yet. This tool makes a short version of one, as a PDF. It is meant for an organisation that does not have to publish such a statement, but does want to show where it stands.

  1. Enter the name of your organisation.
  2. Tick what you have already done to make your website more accessible. The list has twenty points. For example: descriptions for images, enough contrast between text and background, using the website with only the keyboard, and subtitles for videos.
  3. Press Make a PDF. You get a statement with two lists: what you have already done, and what you are still going to work on. Anything you do not tick goes in that second list.
  4. Also put the text from the PDF on your website as a normal page.

What is in the PDF

The PDF is in Dutch. At the top it says ‘Toegankelijkheidsverklaring van’ (Accessibility statement of) with the name of your organisation, and today’s date. Below that are the two lists: ‘Dit hebben we al gedaan’ (What we have already done) and ‘Hier gaan we nog aan werken’ (What we are still going to work on). Each point is a full sentence in plain language, for example: ‘We hebben duidelijke labels bij invulvelden gezet, zodat je weet wat je moet invullen.’ (We have put clear labels on form fields, so you know what to fill in.) At the bottom it says that the statement was made with this tool. The file is called onze-toegankelijkheidsverklaring.pdf.

The tool does not check your website. It lists what you tick. So you decide yourself whether a point is done, or together with the person who builds or manages the website.

Have you improved something later on? Tick it and make a new PDF. The date at the top shows how up to date the statement is.

Good to know

  • Only tick what you have done. If you are not sure, leave it unticked: then it goes with what you are still going to do.
  • The PDF is made in your browser. What you enter stays only in this browser, so you can carry on later. After 7 days without changes, it is deleted. With Start again, above the tool, you delete it straight away.
  • Do you work for a government organisation? Then you have to publish a statement that follows the official Dutch government model. You can read more about this on digitoegankelijk.nl (external website).
  • The PDF has a title and its language is set to Dutch, but it has no tags. Tags are invisible labels that tell a screen reader what is a heading or a list. So a screen reader can usually read the text aloud, but does not recognise the headings and lists. That is why a normal page on your website is easier to read.
  • GameSimulation

    Obstacle course

Try for yourself what it is like to use a website when you cannot see well, your hand shakes, reading is hard or you only have a keyboard. Then you repair the website and try again.
